Older adults and those with preexisting conditions are at a higher risk for developing severe symptoms and complications from COVID-19. Across the country, many nursing home residents have been particularly affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
Here in New Mexico, the attorney general is investigating how an outbreak at La Vida Llena in Albuquerque led to the deaths of 12 residents. The outbreak also led to the infection of many more staff and residents. The attorney general’s investigation shows what nursing homes should be doing to protect their residents.
Failing To Follow Public Health Orders
According to the investigation, the retirement community failed to follow public health orders, provide residents with timely and necessary updates and encourage or require staff from wearing personal protective equipment (PPE). These deficiencies could have significantly worsened the outbreak.
While the investigation is still ongoing, the attorney general hopes that the disclosure of these deficiencies early on will help to prevent future risks to the retirement community.
