The New Mexico Department of Health has recently issued a concerning statement: nearly all nursing homes in the state have at least one safety violation. Specifically, the result of a wave of unannounced inspections found at least one violation in 88% of the 91 nursing homes that were inspected. 4 nursing homes – two in Albuquerque and two in Gallup – received a “failing” grade, while only 11 of those nursing homes passed inspections without a violation demerit.
The inspectors looked for violations that cover a variety of concerns, such as:
- Regulation violations
- Room uncleanliness
- Poor hygiene and living conditions
- Resident medication errors
- Malnutrition and dehydration risks
- Bedsore risks
Patrick Allen, a spokesperson from the NM Department of Health was quoted as saying, “We take the findings of this report very seriously. The quality of long-term care in New Mexico falls short of what our seniors deserve. This must change and we are committed to making it happen.” It was not clear what changes or initiatives the department intended to take soon based on the recent inspection results.
Nursing homes that received low safety and care ratings upon inspection included the following and more:
- Morada Albuquerque
- Las Palomas Center, a Genesis Healthcare facility
- Bonney Home, Inc.
- Red Rocks Care Center, a Genesis Healthcare facility
