Nursing Home Conditions Deteriorate During Pandemic

Conditions deteriorated in nursing homes across the country during the pandemic, as highlighted by a recent Human Rights Watch report.

The isolation of residents from family members and resident advocates allowed nursing homes to operate with little oversight and longstanding problems, like short staffing, to worsen.

The Associated Press found that tens of thousands of residents died from neglect injuries during the pandemic, in addition to the 132,749 deaths from COVID-19.

“Nursing home watchdogs are being flooded with reports of residents kept in soiled diapers so long their skin peeled off, left with bedsores that cut to the bone, and allowed to wither away in starvation or thirst,” according to the AP report.
