Man Suffers Permanent Damages To Brain After Heart Surgery

Patients who face surgery for a major health condition put their lives in the hands of others. Surgeons in New Mexico undergo numerous years of training and residency and are expected to have the utmost diligence in the care and treatment of their patients. If a surgeon is negligent during a medical procedure, permanent damages to the health and well-being of the patient may result.

In a recent lawsuit, a man was awarded a substantial monetary judgment in relation to a previous surgery. He was undergoing heart valve replacement surgery, during which air bubbles entered his arteries and cause him to suffer severe brain damage. The lawsuit claimed that the facility failed to provide a competent surgeon for the procedure. The surgeon in question currently has an inactive license and, accordingly, is not allowed to treat patients.

Severe brain injuries can alter the life of a patient in various ways. These individuals may experience difficulty with speech and/or ability to learn and, in some cases, may develop issues with memory loss. This can have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life, with similar injuries often being long-term or permanent.

Victims who suffer permanent damages as a result of negligence often face periods of significant hardship. Long-term treatment can leave a person with extensive medical expenses, prompting many to seek financial restitution through the civil justice system. Since this can be complex, many people in New Mexico speak with an experienced attorney for advice on how to file a claim against the party deemed at fault.
