Police Officer Suffers Catastrophic Injuries In Accident

Albuquerque authorities say that they had to shut down westbound traffic along Interstate 40 after a serious hit-and-run car accident involving a policeman on a motorcycle. A car struck an Albuquerque police officer while he was driving his police motorcycle. The accident caused the officer to suffer catastrophic injuries.

Immediately following the collision, the driver of the car fled the scene. Police allege that the hit-and-run vehicle was a red, four-door car. They say that the driver did not even bother to stop after hitting the officer.

The policeman was rushed to the hospital. Upon last reports, he was still in critical condition at the medical facility. Police are performing a detailed investigation to try and figure out how the accident happened, and also to try and locate the hit-and-run driver, who remains at large.

This Albuquerque accident, which caused an officer of the law to suffer catastrophic injuries, is clearly a tragedy. Even more worrisome is the fact that the alleged hit-and-run driver has yet to be identified or captured by authorities. This could make it impossible for the injured officer to pursue personal injury claims relating to the accident. Such claims could enable him to pursue money to pay for his injuries if successfully pursued, but without identifying the assailant, the officer will not be able to hold the driver liable for unlawful and negligent actions.

Fortunately, police officers in New Mexico are covered by workers’ compensation insurance if they suffer catastrophic injuries while performing their job duties. As such, the Albuquerque officer and his family will not have to worry about receiving funding for medical care and/or time spent injured and unable to work. Indeed, workers’ compensation will cover a worker, whether he or she is injured due to someone else’s or his or her own negligence.
