Serious Injury To The Brain Has Caused A Spike In ER Visits

New Mexico traumatic brain injuries can be scary for the victims and their loved ones. Serious injury to the brain can result in life-altering side effects. According to a recent report, it appears that the rate of TBI in the emergency room has spiked 30 percent. The data examined in the study was compiled between 2006 and 2010.

Many brain injuries will resolve themselves within two weeks with little to no complications. However, it is not unknown for some brain injuries lead to short- and long-term health conditions. In some cases, long-term medical care may be necessary.

There were roughly 138 million visits to emergency rooms between the years 2006 and 2010. During that time period, the number of ER visits for TBI increased dramatically. Many of the brain injury patients were diagnosed with concussions. The biggest rate of increase in TBI was among small children, under age 3, or adults over 60.

While it is true that many who play sports are susceptible to brain injuries, it is not uncommon for brain injuries to occur on the highways in car accidents. However the injuries are sustained, it is clear that emergency rooms play a huge role in the overall care of brain injuries. They are the first line of defense when it comes to evaluating and treating such injuries.

When a person in New Mexico suffers a brain injury due to the negligence or recklessness of another, possibly from a car accident or another type of accident, it may be beneficial to explore the legal recourses that may be available. It can be expensive to treat the short- and long-term effects of a brain injury. A successfully litigated civil claim may result in monetary damages that can assist in paying for medical care as a result of the serious injury.
