Six Steps for Choosing a Nursing Home for your Loved One
The best way to avoid problems, and maintain your own peace
of mind, is to select a good nursing home from the beginning.
- Talk to
medical professionals, ombudsmen, relatives, friends, and others who have
direct, personal knowledge about local nursing homes.
- Review
state and federal inspection data at the following website: www.medicare.gov/NHCompare/home.asp.
- Visit
several facilities at different times of the day and during the weekend.
Use your eyes, ears and nose to assess the quality of the facility and its
level of personal care.
- Evaluate
staff during a mealtime visit. If the level of attention is inadequate,
the facility is probably understaffed.
- Check the
activities program. It should have something that interests your loved
one.
- To assure
regular family visits, choose a facility that is located near your
family.
